Who We Are:
Furbearers Unlimited
Why Do We Need FurBearers Unlimited?
Since Prehistoric times, the use of wildlife has been important to mankind's survival. In the past century we have seen our world transformed through the marvels of science and technology. As a species we have radically altered how we live, our relationships with each other, and our personal and collective relationships with the natural environment. Our senses are flooded with mountains of information and things to keep the collective head of Western society spinning. Yet, mankind's use of wildlife continues, and necessarily so. As we hasten our development of science and technology we are quickly depleting the resources of our world. Conservation of our non-renewable resources is much talked about in today's society, but consumption of these resources continues to increase even as we agree it must be restrained. Still, there is little discussion today of utilization of our renewable natural resources. In fact, it is quite common to hear opposition to use of these resources, and the suggestion that we substitute a non-renewable resource for a renewable resource. We cannot allow this condition to continue. Today we face a world of instant communication where rational thought is a low priority and accuracy is a byproduct and not the ultimate goal. We live among people who isolate themselves from real, natural environments, where no distinctions are made between wild animals and house pets, and oftentimes, animals and man. Little thought is given to the needs of wildlife, and particularly to those of furbearers. It is little realized today that the welfare of furbearers has a direct relationship to other wildlife species and to the environment that society is so concerned about. We need Furbearers Unlimited to educate the public to the needs of sound wildlife management practices, so furbearers will be present for future generations to use and enjoy as mankind has done through history.
What FurBearers Unlimited is not The financial resources of wildlife management agencies and the fur industry are limited. Many fine organization are established to address fur industry needs, so it is important to understand what Furbearers Unlimited is not. FBU wants to assure that it is not wasting money duplicating the efforts of existing organizations and associations. 1. FBU is not a trappers association. However it is a resource for the many trappers organizations in North America and throughout the world. It will not dictate policy, propose specific laws, or in any way strive for leadership in the fur industry. It will assist in leadership education efforts if called upon. 2. FBU is not a spokesperson for wildlife agencies or the fur industry, but it will help those people become more effective through educational seminars and workshops. The staff will participate in appropriate public forums on issues affecting conservation, management and wise use of furbearers, but only as a source of information, not as advocates for an industry position. 3. FBU is not a law firm, though it may retain legal council. It is not a lobbying organization seeking to impose a point of view on pending legislation. The staff will be available, however, to serve as expert witnesses in litigation's and governmental hearings upon request, when such appearances are appropriate and conform to internal policies. It will generally provide informational support for litigation and lobbying efforts to groups and individuals supporting the conservation and sound wildlife management practices of furbearer species. Why your support and contributions to FBU are needed The financial resources of wildlife management agencies and the fur industry are limited. Your donations will have a tremendous impact and will help make the following possible: 1. To Preserve and enhance
furbearer habitat 2. To Promote and assist
scientific research of furbearer species and their needs 3. To Teach conservation
education to the public 4. To Monitor species
population densities 5. To Provide educational
scholarships
Environmental hazards, development, and ecological change concern all those who really care about our wildlife. Your Sponsorship will help to support these vital conservation programs. FBU will consider all formal applications for research proposals. These are reviewed and prioritized, with the most urgent funding given to State Agencies, University programs or other Institutions.
